Becky's Story
Cancer should be the worst diagnosis anyone can get. But it isn’t. Actress and comedian Becky Shorrocks, 36, from London, was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) in February 2017.
‘At least you don’t have cancer’
Although Becky had experienced symptoms of rapid heart rate - once when boxing and once when running - she ignored the symptoms, presuming, like many, that heart problems were down to people “not looking after themselves”.
“I’m sorry to say I would think of unhealthy, overweight men,” she says.
Becky ended up in hospital after suffering palpitations, dizziness and breathlessness while on a short run, training for her second half-marathon.
She was kept in hospital for 11 days before she was diagnosed and fitted with an ICD.
Recalling her diagnosis, Becky admits her world went into a spin and she felt overwhelmed: “I felt lost, confused, sad and angry. I was very afraid of death and that was a big one for me.”
Since then, Becky has learned to come to terms with her condition, but admits: “The difficulty with cardiomyopathy is that we look well, so it’s hard to understand that we don’t always feel it.
Cardiomyopathy UK Chief Executive Joel Rose says: “We want to show that cardiomyopathy affects people of all shapes and sizes and not just older, unhealthy people.
“The misconceptions can also mean people, who have some of the signs and symptoms of cardiomyopathy, may pass them off as unimportant, thinking they are not the sort of person who would have a serious heart problem.”
